FAQ list
What transformers have been tested for compatibility with Philips Hue MR16 bulbs?
My transformer is not on the compatibility list for MR16 bulbs. Can I still use them?
Yes. However, make sure that the transformer does not have a minimum load and that the bulb does not use more wattage than the transformer can handle. Please refer to the compatibility list [URL] and your transformer's specifications.
The wattage of the lamps should not exceed the maximum wattage of the transformer. Philips Hue MR16 bulbs have a wattage between 5 W and 6.5 W, depending on the product version. For example, a transformer that can handle up to 15 W can be connected to a maximum of two bulbs.
I don’t know what transformer I have. How do I know if I can use Philips Hue MR16 bulbs?
To make sure that you can use Philips Hue MR16 bulbs, check the following:
- Confirm that your existing MR16 bulbs are 12 V bulbs and not 230 V.
- Confirm that your transformer does not have a minimum load and that it's a LED transformer.
- Check that the MR16 bulbs do not require more wattage from the transformer than it can provide. For example, if your transformer's maximum load is 20 W, you can use three Philips Hue MR16 bulbs, as a they use a maximum of 6.5 W, depending on the product version.
If all above is true, you can use Philips Hue MR16 bulbs.
Can I replace every traditional MR16 I have with a Philips Hue MR16 bulb?
Yes, depending on your setup and transformer.
The number of bulbs that can be connected to each transformer depends on the bulb and transformer specifications. Philips Hue MR16 bulbs consume a maximum of 6.5 W each, depending on the product version. Please make sure you do not exceed the maximum load of your transformer.
If your transformer is not a LED transformer but a halogen transformer, you need to take 20% of the maximum load wattage of the transformer and then divide by the wattage of the Philips Hue MR16 bulb.
Do MR16 bulbs work with fixtures that are connected to a traditional wired dimmer switch?
Philips Hue products are dimmable using Philips Hue-compatible devices. Using a wired dimmer switch with Philips Hue bulbs is not recommended.
