A guide to the best webcam lighting

When it comes to setting up the perfect lighting for your video calls, paying attention to the details can make a huge difference to how you appear on screen. Proper lighting not only enhances your appearance but also improves the overall experience for those taking part in your video calls and live streams.

Direct light towards you

One of the key tips for achieving great webcam lighting is to position your light source in front of you, angled towards your face and not behind you or directly at your side. If you need to use some overhead lighting, dim the light to keep it soft. This helps to illuminate your features evenly and reduce harsh shadows, resulting in a more flattering and natural appearance on camera.

Use multiple light sources

For a more engaging and dynamic look, consider incorporating multiple strategically placed light sources around your workspace. This technique helps to eliminate flatness and enhance visual interest in your webcam setup. By diffusing light with multiple lamps, your face will be softly illuminated. An effective method to achieve this is the two-point lighting setup. Place a lamp on each side of your screen and aim them towards your face at a 45-degree angle. Opt for a table lamp such as the Hue Signe table lamp or a Hue Go accent light as one light source, while a floor lamp like the longer Hue Signe can serve as the second light source.

Customise brightness and colour temperature

Adjusting the brightness and colour temperature of your lights can significantly impact the overall mood and tone of your video. Experiment with different tones of light to find the perfect balance that complements your skin tone and creates an inviting atmosphere for your viewers.

Hue bulbs and lamps are tuneable, which means they can be set to any colour temperature from cool bright white to softer warm tones. Remember that going too bright can wash out your face on video and make it difficult for others to see your features while going too warm could make your skin tone appear too yellow. For optimal results, try a cooler tone of light that replicates natural daylight.

Bright idea: Following the two-point setup? Ensure both lamps are set to the same colour temperature but make one lamp slightly brighter than the other to create a subtle shadow to add more depth.

Add pops of colour light

Just as thoughtfully placed plants and art can make your background look more visually appealing, a subtle pop of colourful light can also add interest to your on-screen presence. Accenting the walls or furniture behind you with diffused light will add depth and make your space seem less one-dimensional on screen. Try a combination of Play light bars, Signe table lamps or Hue Go accent lights. They’re compact and portable, making them a great option for creating lighting effects. Place them on surfaces behind you, such as bookshelves or tables, and direct them at the wall to wash it with a blend of colourful light. Also consider using colour light to highlight ornaments, art or architectural features.

Depending on the type of video call, go for subtle pastel shades of pink, yellow or orange. For a bolder look, blend contrasting pops of red, purple and blue. The Hue app lets you set your colour-capable bulbs and lamps to any colour you like with just a few simple taps. Choose from a palette of millions of colours to get the perfect look for your call and your mood.

Optimise to get the best lighting for webcam meetings

If you have recurring meetings via video calls or present regular live streams, then why not take advantage of the advanced smart light features in the Hue app? They’ll save you time when setting up your lights, configuring them to create the same look each time and even help stop your calls from over-running.

Create a custom light scene

Once you've found the perfect intensity, tone or colour of light for your webcam setup, why not save it as a custom light Scene in the Hue app. In fact, you can create multiple light scenes across the lights you use for calls or live streams. Select the combination of light and lamps, select the colour of light for each one, assign it a name and save it in the app. With a quick tap in the app, you can switch to webcam lighting whenever you need to jump on a call.

Set a smart light automation

Video call scheduled at the same time each week? Use a custom automation to turn your Webcam Scene on automatically by setting it to the days and times of your meetings — it's one less thing to think about before starting your call.

Set a timer with smart light

Transform your smart lighting system into a timer for your video calls. Personalise your lights to dim, brighten, flash, change colours or turn off after a specific duration that you set. Don't leave your viewers in the dark though!

How to create the best lighting for webcam streaming

Compared to work meetings and family catch-ups, live streaming to a loyal audience of followers can last a lot longer, in many cases for a couple of hours. So, if you're an influencer with your own online channel, it's even more important to keep your viewers engaged with a professional-looking lighting setup for screen time.

Eye-level lighting for a flattering look

Position your light source at eye level or slightly above to avoid unflattering shadows cast by overhead lighting. This setup helps illuminate your face evenly and enhances your facial features, creating a more natural and appealing appearance on camera. Hue Play gradient lightstrips are a great option for eye-level webcam lighting. Designed to be easily fitted to the back of single- or triple-monitor setups, the lightstrips will create a diffused halo of light around your screen by blending any colors of light you choose.

Lighting distance for softness and control

Experiment with the distance between your light source and yourself to achieve the desired level of softness and control in your lighting setup. Placing the light source too close may result in harsh, overpowering brightness while positioning it too far away can lead to uneven lighting and shadows. Find the sweet spot where the light is soft and flattering, allowing you to adjust the intensity and direction as needed for a polished and well-balanced on-screen appearance.

Experiment with creative lighting effects

The Hue app offers a huge range of creative smart lighting effects and settings that will add a unique and eye-catching element to your webcam streaming. Set beautiful light Scenes to make your background glow with colour. Choose from dozens of preset themes in the Hue scene gallery. For added visual interest why not set a dynamic light scene? Hit play and your lights will gradually transition between the different colours of the scene! These creative touches can help set the mood, convey your personality or highlight specific areas of your background, adding visual interest and depth to your video frame. By incorporating creative lighting effects, you can make your live streaming sessions more engaging and memorable.
