My dimmer switch isn't working properly. What should I do?
If your dimmer switch was once connected to a Bridge and functioning normally:
- Make sure that all four LED indicator lights on top of the Bridge are on.
- Make sure that your dimmer switch is operational by pressing any button and ensuring that the LED indicator lights up green.
- Make sure the dimmer switch is within range by ensuring that it is not farther away from the Hue Bridge than your farthest light.
- Make sure that the lights you want to control are functioning correctly in the Philips Hue app. If not, this could indicate a problem with the light itself rather than the dimmer switch.
- Make sure your settings are correct in Settings > Accessories.
If this doesn't resolve the problem, try the following:
- Restart the dimmer switch by pressing and holding all four buttons of the switch at the same time. Let go when you see the LED indicator on the front of the dimmer switch flash red and green.
- Reset your dimmer switch by pressing and holding the Setup button on the back of the switch for 10 seconds.
If your dimmer switch was never connected to a Bridge and was functioning normally:
- Make sure that your dimmer switch is operational by pressing any button and checking that the LED indicator is lighting up green.
- Make sure the dimmer switch is within range of your Philips Hue light (within about 12 meters).
- Make sure the light you want to control with your dimmer switch is connected to power and powered on. Its light switch should be in the "on" position.
- Restart the dimmer switch by pressing and holding all four buttons of the switch at the same time. Let go when you see the LED indicator light on the front of the switch flash red and green.
If your dimmer switch flashes red when you press a button:
- Your dimmer switch may have become disconnected. Reconnect the dimmer switch to your Bridge in Settings > Accessories.
If your dimmer switch blinks red shortly after a press, its battery needs to be replaced. If it blinks orange, its battery needs to be replaced son. If the switch is connected to a Bridge, go to Settings > Accessoires and select the dimmer switch in question. Scroll to the bottom of the screen and check the battery status.
What can I control with a Philips Hue dimmer switch?
The dimmer switch can be used in two ways, depending on if it's connected to a Bridge or not.
Standalone mode:
This mode lets you control a Philips Hue light without a Bridge, including turning on/off the light, dimming, and brightening. If the dimmer switch was purchased with a White ambiance or White and color ambiance light fixture, you can also cycle through four preset light recipes, including Read, Relax, Energize, and Concentrate. It is not possible to control the color of the light beyond the preset light scenes. You can connect the dimmer switch to up to 10 additional light fixtures by holding the it near a light fixture and long pressing the top button. When the light blinks, the light fixture is connected.
Connected to a Bridge:
To unlock the full functionality of a dimmer switch, you can connect it to a Bridge via the Philips Hue app. When paired with your smart lighting system, the dimmer switch can control up to 50 Philips Hue lights in up to two Rooms or a Zone. You can also set the dimmer switch to cycle through scenes, turn on certain settings at certain times, start the Natural light scene, and more.
What kind of battery do I need for the Philips Hue dimmer switch?
Depending on the generation dimmer switch you have, you'll need a CR2450 or CR2032 (coin cell) battery. You can easily recognize your generation dimmer switch by the front button — if it has the Philips Hue logo, it's a newer generation and uses a CR2032 battery. The older generation uses a CR2450 battery.
