Is it easy to install the wall switch module behind an existing light switch?
We designed the wall switch module to be as easy to install as possible. However, you need some electrical knowledge and skills. Familiarize yourself with local electrical codes and regulations and consult an electrician when in doubt.
Can I control traditional (non-smart) lights with the wall switch module?
No. The wall switch module only works with Philips Hue lights and requires a Bridge. After installing the wall switch module, you can control your Philips Hue lights with the existing (traditional) light switch that the wall switch is installed behind. You can also configure the light switch to control Rooms or Zones.
Will the wall switch module fit behind my light switch?
The wall switch module measures 1.69 in x 0.39 in x 1.5 in (4.3 cm x 1 cm x 3.8 cm) and has been designed to fit behind most standard light switches. However, some switches may have a nonstandard electrical box that may be smaller than what the wall switch module can fit into.
Before starting installation, remove your existing light switch to ensure the wall switch module will fit behind it. Remember to turn off your circuit breaker before starting any electrical work, including removing the existing switch.
Will the wall switch module work with the type of light switch I have?
The wall switch module works with most common light switches, including (but not limited to):
- Single/double rocker switches in one wall plate
- Single/double toggle switches in one wall plate
- Push-button switches, i.e., those that return to a neutral position when pushed
However, some light switches — such as those with existing dimmers or combined power outlet/light switches — are not compatible with the wall switch module. Read more about compatible light switches in the Philips Hue wall switch module installation guide.
Is the wall switch module connected to my home’s electricity or with a neutral wire?
The wall switch module is battery-powered, which means it doesn’t need to be wired in to your home's electricity or require a neutral wire.
The wall switch module comes with a push-in wire connector. This push-in wire connector is used to connect your mains to each other, ensuring your smart lights remain powered on. This means that your lights will never become “unreachable,” and can always be controlled, including with the existing light switch.
What is the battery lifetime of the wall switch module?
The battery will last at least five years with normal use in normal indoor conditions. When the battery is running low, you will see an alert in the Settings tab of the Philips Hue app.
Can I install the wall switch module myself?
Local regulations may prohibit work on electrical wires without a professional. Consult your local authorities or an electrician to ask for guidance.
Does the wall switch module work with a 2-way (EU)/3-way (US) light switches?
Yes. The wall switch module will work with 2-way/3-way switches, or even with additional setups. Read more about compatible light switches in the wall switch module installation guide.
How does the scene toggle feature work?
The scene toggle feature ensures you get the most out of your existing light switch. With this feature, you can configure your light switch to trigger up to three light scenes. Each press (or toggle, depending on the type of light switch you have) sets a new scene. Press once for the first scene, and press again within three seconds to set the second scene. Press again within another three seconds to set the third. Pressing again after the third scene will result in the first scene, as the scene toggle feature works in a loop.
Can I dim my lights with the wall switch module?
It depends on the type of light switch you have.
If the wall switch module is installed behind a rocker switch, you cannot dim your lights in the traditional method. However, with the scene toggle feature, you can configure each of the three scenes to have different brightness levels, so that you can dim the lights by pressing the switch to trigger the additional scenes.
If the wall switch module is installed behind a push button switch that returns to a neutral position after being pushed, you can dim the lights by pressing longer on the switch (a “long press”).
Read more about compatible light switches in the Philips Hue wall switch module installation guide.
Does the wall switch module work with Bluetooth?
No. It requires a Bridge.
Can I extend the provided wiring?
No. The wall switch module must be installed only as instructed.
What are some tips for purchasing and installing the wall switch module?
Before purchasing:
- Examine the way your light switch is installed to ensure that the wall switch module will work with the type of light switch you have.
Attention! Always make sure your circuit breaker is off before removing the light switch plate.
- Ensure there is enough room in your electrical box for the wall switch module to fit inside. It measures 4.3 cm x 1 cm x 3.7 cm.
- Watch tutorial videos and/or read documentation of the light switch.
Before installing:
- Electrical devices should only be installed and connected by electrically skilled people.
- For safe installation, commissioning, and operation, read the installation and legal guide.
- Always switch off the circuit breaker before any assembly, disassembly, or replacement of the battery.
- Ensure no one switches on the circuit breaker during assembly, disassembly, or replacement of the battery.
- Cover any live wires.
During installation:
- Take a photo of the original light switch’s wiring before removing it. The wires of the wall switch module will generally be inserted into the same places on the switch itself, while the original wires from your home’s electricity will be terminated with a wire connector.
- Complete the installation before pushing the button on the wall switch module or adding it in the Philips Hue app.
- The wall switch module may start blinking if accidental contact is made (e.g., if the two included wires touch, or if you press the light switch once it’s connected). If this happens, it’s safe to continue with the physical installation. After finishing the installation, set up the wall switch module in the Philips Hue app.
- Consult an electrician for support when in doubt.
My wall switch module isn’t working properly or is unreachable in the Philips Hue app.
If your wall switch module is not working or is unreachable in the Philips Hue app after installation, check to make sure it's installed properly according to the instructions in the how-to video and installation guide. Remember to turn off your circuit breaker before performing any electrical work. If the wall switch module is installed correctly but is still not working, follow the reset instructions in the installation guide.
